The Papaya Incident

Maya's stomach did gymnastics as she stared at the lunch table. The Wellness Squad—led by Instagram-famous Jade—was holding court again, and today they were all about their "anti-inflammatory cleansing protocols."

"You're still eating that?" Jade asked, gesturing at Maya's sandwich with perfectly manicured nails. "That bread is basically inflammation."

Maya felt her face burn. She was SO done with feeling like the only person at school who didn't have a personalized nutrition plan.

"Actually," she heard herself saying, "I'm starting a new regimen today. Super nutrient-dense."

Oh no. The words were out before her brain could catch up.

"No way!" Jade perked up. "What's your rotation?"

"Oh, you know," Maya lied smoothly, "lots of spinach, obviously. And papaya."

"Papaya?" Jade's eyebrows shot up. "That's actually brilliant for gut health."

Maya nodded like she knew what that meant. The bell saved her.

After school, she biked to the grocery store, praying no one from school saw her buying actual papaya. The fruit looked alien in her hands—orange, speckled, vaguely like a melon that couldn't commit to a shape.

Back home, she Googled "how to cut papaya" and watched three tutorials. The knife slipped. She almost lost a finger.

The first bite was... interesting. Like cantaloupe's weird cousin who spent a semester abroad and came back with attitude.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Jade: "Wellness Squad meetup tomorrow. Bring your papaya!"

Maya stared at the message, then at the half-eaten fruit, then at herself in the spoon's reflection. Something shifted. She didn't have to fake it to impress them. She could actually TRY this wellness thing. Even if the papaya tasted like confusion.

She took another bite. She'd figure it out. The vitamin supplements she'd also bought were her backup plan anyway.

Baby steps.

The next day, she sat with the Wellness Squad, papaya in hand. Jade took a bite, made a face, and said, "Honestly? This is kind of gross. But respect for trying it."

They laughed. Real laughter.

And just like that, Maya wasn't faking it anymore. She was just a person eating questionable fruit with friends. Papaya and all.
