The Papaya Incident

Maya's orange bikini felt like a neon sign announcing her insecurity. She stood at the edge of Jake's pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline, while the popular kids laughed at something she couldn't hear. This was exactly why she'd almost said no to the end-of-summer party.

"Hey! Maya!" Jake waved from the diving board, water droplets glistening on his chest like tiny prisms. "You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?"

Before she could respond, Chloe appeared beside her, holding something that looked like a alien egg. "Try this papaya. Jake's dad got it from some specialty market. It's supposed to be like, exotic and stuff."

Maya took the slice, heart doing this weird flutter thing that had nothing to do with the fruit. Jake was watching her.

She bit into the papaya. And immediately regretted everything. It was slimy. It was weirdly musky. And her brain short-circuited.

"Oh my god, do you hate it?" Chloe giggled. "Everyone said it was an acquired taste but—"

Then it happened. Maya's phone buzzed in her hand. A notification from Jake. Send. Like. Right. Now.

She fumbled, slippery papaya hands meeting slippery iPhone, and the whole world went into slow motion as her phone arced through the air and—splash.

"NO!" Maya scrambled toward the pool, but Jake was already diving, surfacing a second later with her dripping device.

"Got it," he said, grinning. Water dripped from his hair like he was some kind of pool-dwelling creature. "That was epic."

The party went silent. Then someone clapped. Then everyone was clapping, and Maya felt her face burning hotter than any sun.

But then Jake was there, somehow standing too close, handing over her phone with those fingers that maybe definitely brushed against hers. "Hey, at least now you have to give me your number. So I can text you about its, uh, recovery status."

Lightning cracked across the sky, sudden and shocking, and everyone screamed and ran for the house as thunder rattled the pool deck.

Jake grabbed her wrist before she could move. "Wait. Your phone's totally waterproof, right?"

"What? No! Why would—"

"Then you should probably kiss me. You know, before the storm gets worse."

Maya stared at him, papaya aftertaste still weird in her mouth, heart doing this other flutter thing that was totally different from before. "That is the worst pickup line ever."

"Yeah." Jake's ears turned pink. "But..."

Lightning flashed again. Maya grabbed his swim trunks and pulled him toward her, thinking that papaya disasters might not be so bad after all.
