The Papaya Incident
Marcus's dad had signed him up for summer padel lessons at the country club, which was basically social suicide for someone whose entire wardrobe came from Target. But there was Chloe, with her perfect ponytail and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Marcus was desperate to not look like a total flop.
"Your grip's all wrong," Chloe said, barely glancing up from her phone between serves. "You're holding it like a tennis racquet. This is padel."
"My bad," Marcus muttered, sweating through his knock-off polo.
The real disaster happened during the snack break. Marcus's health-nut mom had packed him sliced papaya instead of the cool chips everyone else was sharing. He tried to hide it, but of course his backpack spilled, and bright orange fruit tumbled across the patio like something out of a nightmare.
Chloe's friend Tyler laughed. "Dude, is that actual fruit? In summer? What are you, a rabbit?"
Marcus felt his face burn. He started shoving papaya slices back into his bag, but then someone's sneaker stepped on one. Splat.
Everyone went quiet.
"My bad," said a voice. It was Riley from his English class, who Marcus had barely noticed before. She dropped beside him and started helping him clean up the mess. "Actually, papaya's fire. My mom makes it with lime and chili."
"You'd eat that on purpose?" Tyler asked, genuinely confused.
"Try it sometime, Tyler. Your palate might thank me." Riley handed Marcus a napkin. "You good?"
Marcus nodded, suddenly realizing he'd been trying to impress the wrong people all summer.
Later that night, his iPhone buzzed. Unknown number: *This is Riley from padel. Sorry about today. Tyler's actually chill once you get past the performative stuff. Want to hang out at the courts tomorrow? I'll bring papaya. Lime and chili style.*
Marcus typed back: *Only if you teach me that grip properly.*
He deleted his carefully curated Instagram post about how padel was "his new obsession." Some things didn't need an audience.
