The Papaya Incident

Maya smoothed down her frizzy hair for the tenth time, checking her reflection in the bathroom mirror. The quinceañera was in full swing downstairs, and she was hiding.

"Maya! Your tía's looking for you!" her little cousin called through the door.

She groaned. The only thing worse than being the only fifteen-year-old without a boyfriend at a party full of couples was her mom constantly pushing her toward

"nice boys" like Mateo, who once spent an entire dinner talking about his cryptocurrency investments.

Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket. Probably the group chat roasting her for ghosting again.

*Bestie: where r u???*

*Maya: coming rn*

She took a breath and headed for the backyard, where the adults were gathered around a mechanical bull someone had rented. Because nothing says sophisticated fifteenth birthday celebration like watching your drunk uncle attempt to ride a mechanical bull.

"Mija! Try the fruit salad!" Tía Carmen shoved a plate at her. "It's got papaya! So exotic!"

Exotic. Maya snorted. Her tía acted like papaya was some rare delicacy instead of literally available at the grocery store down the street.

She took a bite anyway because refusing tía's food was basically a war crime.

"You trying the bull, mija?" Some guy she didn't recognize leaned against the fence, grinning like he knew something she didn't.

"Hard pass."

"Come on. Bet you can't stay on longer than me."

Something about his cocky energy annoyed her. Or maybe it was just that her hair was already rebelling against the humidity, and she was feeling that particular kind of teenage desperation to not look lame in front of a cute boy.

"Fine."

She climbed onto the mechanical bull, determined to at least not fall off immediately. The operator winked at her and pressed the button.

Maya lasted exactly three seconds before the bull bucked her off spectacularly. She landed in the grass, papaya somehow smeared across her face like some kind of tropical war paint.

Silence. Then laughter.

But the guy wasn't laughing. He was just staring.

"That was...

"Embarrassing?" She wiped fruit from her cheek, wanting to die.

"Kind of badass, actually." He held out a hand. "I'm Leo."

"Maya."

His hand was warm. Her hair was a disaster. She had papaya on her chin like some kind of feral fruit monster.

And for the first time all night, she didn't care about her iPhone lighting up with notifications or whether her hair was perfect or what anyone thought.

"Want another round?" she asked, grinning.

Leo's eyes lit up. "You're on."
