The Papaya Incident

bulliphonepapaya

Kai's fingers hovered over the send button, his cracked **iPhone** screen glowing in the dark of his bedroom. Three simple dots. Just three dots to Maya, who'd been his lab partner since seventh grade and suddenly seemed unreachably gorgeous in tenth grade.

"You're overthinking it again," he muttered to himself. "Just press send."

"Bull**,**" Maya had texted him earlier when he tried to claim he'd never heard of Thai Night at school. "You told me you love pad thai like, three weeks ago."

Now he was standing in the middle of the chaotic cultural festival, heart hammering against his ribs. Students everywhere — samosas cooking, mariachi music, kids attempting Korean calligraphy. And there it was: the papaya table.

"Try it!" Mrs. Lee beamed, holding out a wedge of the orange fruit. "Fresh papaya, grown in my sister's garden!"

Kai hesitated. He'd never tried papaya before. But Maya was watching from across the gym, probably laughing at how he'd claimed he was "basically Thai" because he'd had pad thai twice from the mall food court.

"Okay," he said, and popped it in his mouth.

His face contorted. "It tastes like... melted musk melon?"

Maya materialized beside him, grinning. "Told you you'd try new things if I pushed you enough."

"You were right," Kai admitted, still chewing. "This is... actually pretty good."

"Bull**,**" she teased. "You totally hated it."

He laughed, and for the first time all night, the knot in his chest loosened. Maybe later he'd finally send that text. But for now, trying papaya with Maya watching him make a fool of himself felt like exactly where he needed to be.
