The Papaya Incident

Maya stood by the pool edge, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The **water** shimmered invitingly, but jumping in meant exposing her new bikini—and her slightly chubby thighs—to everyone at Jake's party. She'd been working on her confidence all summer, but some days it felt like she was still the quiet girl who sat in the back of algebra.

"Maya! Come in!" Jake yelled, splashing toward her. His hair dripped **water**, and for a second, she forgot to breathe.

"Just admiring the view," she managed, hoping he couldn't tell her hands were shaking.

Her phone buzzed. Mom: **Cable** guy coming between 3-5. Don't order movies on demand.

Maya rolled her eyes. Typical. Her parents still refused to cut the cord, even though streaming was literally everyone else's reality. She typed back a quick thumbs up and shoved her phone in her beach bag.

"Food's ready!" someone shouted from the patio.

The spread was impressive: chips, guac, watermelon—and a bowl of orange chunks Maya didn't recognize. Jake's mom, Mrs. Chen, beamed at her. "Fresh papaya from my sister's farm. Have you ever tried it?"

Maya shook her head, but Jake was already reaching for it. "**Papaya**'s fire," he said, and something in her chest did a little flip.

She took a piece. The texture was weird—soft but grainy—and the taste... tropical but kind of musky. Not bad, just unexpected. Like Jake himself, honestly.

"Good?" he asked, suddenly right there.

"Different," she said, and they both laughed.

His phone buzzed. He groaned. "My parents' **cable** is out again. I swear they're the last people on earth paying for broadcast TV."

"Wait—same," Maya said. "My parents are obsessed with their cable package. It's literally all they talk about."

"No way. My dad's like, 'Why would we stream when we have 400 channels?'" Jake mimicked his dad's voice perfectly.

Maya laughed so hard she almost dropped her papaya. And then, without thinking, she grabbed his hand.

"Bet you can't make me eat that papaya underwater," she said, pulling him toward the pool.

Jake's eyes widened. "Challenge accepted."

They jumped together, **water** exploding around them, and somewhere in the splash and laughter and weird tropical fruit taste, Maya stopped worrying about her thighs and started noticing how Jake's hand felt in hers.
