The Papaya Incident

Maya's mom had gone full wellness influencer again, which meant Maya's lunchbox contained the most embarrassing fruit known to humanity: papaya. In the cafeteria. With Jason watching.

"Did you seriously just pull out a papaya?" Jason raised an eyebrow, that stupidly cute crooked smile making Maya's stomach do backflips. "That's actual beta energy."

Maya shoved the fruit back in her bag. "My mom's on this vitamin kick. She thinks everything's a deficiency waiting to happen."

"Bro, tell me about it." Jason leaned in. "My dad's making me take these massive bear-mode supplements. Says it's for football." He gestured at his arms. "Like I'm not already yoked enough."

Maya snorted, and Jason laughed—that real laugh, not the performative one he used with his friends. Something in her chest squeezed.

Then Chloe appeared, sliding into the seat next to Jason like she'd been summoned by the sound of male attention. "What's so funny?" Her eyes flicked over Maya, dismissal faster than a blink.

"Maya's mom has her on this vitamin thing," Jason said, but he'd already turned toward Chloe.

Chloe wrinkled her nose. "Weird. Anyway, did you hear about Sarah? She's telling everyone Tyler tried to—"

Maya stopped listening. This was it: her chance. Jason was actually talking to her, not AT her. But here came the bull in the china shop, literally—and Chloe wasn't even the problem. The problem was Maya's own mouth, sealed shut by three years of careful observation.

The papaya sat in her backpack like a radioactive secret.

At home, Maya FaceTimed her best friend. "I'm such a coward."

"You're not a coward," Jamie said. "You're calculated. There's a difference."

"Jason called me beta, Jamie. BETA." Maya groaned into her pillow. "And I just sat there taking it."

"He was teasing you. Flirting-teasing, not mean-teasing. Trust me, I've seen him with Chloe. That's different energy."

Maya stared at her ceiling. "Tomorrow. Tomorrow I'm gonna say something back."

Next morning, Maya swapped the papaya for a granola bar. Normal. Safe. But Jason found her anyway by her locker.

"Hey, vitamin girl." He leaned against the neighboring locker, easy confidence that made her knees stupidly weak. "You coming to the game Friday? We're playing the Bears. It's gonna be epic."

Bears. The word hit Maya like a physical thing. Those supplements he'd mentioned—were they actually bear-related? Or was he just messing with her again?

She studied his face, looking for the joke. Found only open curiosity. And something else.

"Maybe," Maya said. "If I can sneak past my mom's wellness protocols. She thinks stadium food is poison."

Jason laughed, really laughed. "Bro, same. But for real—come early? I can get you on the field before the game. Show you why this bear thing matters."

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. The moment. And suddenly the papaya in her backpack didn't feel like radioactive shame. It felt like armor.

"Yeah," she said, and something shifted in her chest—light, uncomplicated. "Yeah. I'll be there."
