The Papaya Incident

Maya stood in the corner of Jake's backyard party, clutching her red solo cup like a lifeline. The only sophomore at a senior party, she was lowkey regretting letting Chloe drag her here.

"You're literally being antisocial," Chloe had said before bouncing toward the volleyball game. Now Maya was alone, watching this golden retriever - Jake's dog, Barnaby - zero in on her like he sensed her awkwardness from across the lawn.

Then she saw him: Lucas, the baseball pitcher everyone had a crush on, heading straight for the fruit table. Maya's brain short-circuited. This was it - her chance to finally talk to him instead of just staring from the back of honors English.

She grabbed the nearest fruit from the platter, determined to look sophisticated and grown-up. Papaya. Exotic. Mature. Totally not something she'd ever tried before, but how hard could it be?

Lucas turned around, and Maya froze. He was even cuter up close, with those ridiculously long eyelashes and the faintest smattering of freckles across his nose.

"Hey, you're in my English class, right?" He gestured to her cup. "What're you drinking?"

Maya's mind went completely blank. "Oh, just, uh, fruit punch."

She took a confident bite of her papaya showcase piece.

The texture was like wet soap. The taste hit her like a baseball to the face - somewhere between rotten cantaloupe andliteral dirt. Maya's eyes widened in horror as her tongue betrayed her, and she nearly gagged.

"Are you okay?" Lucas's expression shifted from interested to concerned.

"Fine!" Maya squeaked. "Just... unexpected flavor profile."

She choked it down like a champ, but her dignity was crumbling. Then, like a final nail in her social coffin, Barnaby chose that moment to jump up and enthusiastically lick Maya's face.

"Barnaby!" Lucas laughed, grabbing the dog's collar. "Sorry, he loves everyone."

Maya wiped dog slobber from her chin, humiliated. This was it. Her social life was officially over before it had even begun.

"Actually," Lucas said, grinning, "that papaya was sitting out for like three hours. I wouldn't eat it." He reached past her and grabbed something else. "Here, try this instead."

He handed her a proper fruit cup - strawberries, melon, and grapes. Safe, normal fruit that didn't taste like disappointment.

"Thanks," Maya managed, her face burning.

"So," Lucas leaned against the table, totally chill, "you're the one who wrote that essay about goldfish having three-second memories, right? That was actually really cool."

Maya blinked. He remembered? From three months ago?

"Yeah, actually that's a myth," she found herself saying. "Goldfish can remember stuff for months. I got obsessed after our teacher said they were basically swimming vegetables."

"No way," Lucas said, genuinely interested. "You should tell my mom that. She keeps killing hers because she thinks they don't recognize her."

They talked for twenty minutes about fish intelligence, his baseball team's terrible season, and how both their parents were making them eat more spinach, which they both agreed was the actual worst vegetable.

By the time Chloe finally found her, Maya was sitting on the grass with Lucas and Barnaby, genuinely laughing.

"I see you made friends," Chloe whispered later, wiggling her eyebrows.

Maya smiled, watching Lucas across the room. "Yeah. I guess I did."
