The Papaya Incident
Jordan adjusted their snapback, trying to look casual while mentally screaming. The party was already popping – music thumping, people scattered across the backyard, and there it was: the legendary papaya fruit bowl that Sierra had brought back from her aunt's farm in Hawaii.
"You gonna try it or just stare at it all night?" Marcus said, smirking. His clique was watching, because of course they were.
Jordan's palm was already sweating against their phone. They'd spent all week curating the perfect vibe, and now they were about to be destroyed by tropical fruit. "Yeah, 'course. Just... appreciating the aesthetic."
"Bro, it's fruit, not an NFT," Maya called out, and everyone laughed. Jordan's face was definitely doing that thing where it looked like a tomato had a meltdown.
The dare had been stupid – Tyler bet Jordan couldn't handle "exotic flavors." Now Jordan stood there, papaya slice in hand, while Tyler's phone camera was suspiciously angled.
The bite wasn't bad, actually. Sweet, kind of musky, weirdly pepperminty? Jordan chewed, trying to look unbothered.
Then it happened.
The swallow went down wrong. Jordan choked. Not cool-guy choked, like actually I-can't-breathe choked. Water sprayed. Someone screamed. Tyler was laughing so hard he dropped his phone.
It took three solid minutes of coughing, Sierra aggressively patting Jordan's back, and Marcus handing them a – very helpful – handful of goldfish crackers before they could breathe again.
"Y'all are dramatic," Sierra said, but her eyes were soft. "You okay?"
Jordan nodded, face still burning. The goldfish crackers were stale. This night was a disaster.
But then Maya sat down next to them on the patio. "That was actually kind of legendary. Most people would've played it cool and fake." She grinned. "Wanna help me finish this papaya before Tyler's camera roll gets any more material?"
Jordan's palm stopped sweating. Maybe the night wasn't ruined after all.
"Only if you promise not to film me," they said, and Maya's smile said everything Jordan needed to know.
Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. And sometimes, they become something more.
