The Papaya Incident

Maya's stomach did backflips as she stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. First school dance. First time wearing actual makeup. First potential disaster waiting to happen.

"You've got this," she whispered, then double-checked her backpack. Extra hair tie? Check. Phone battery? Full. The emergency vitamin C gummies her mom insisted she pack? Obviously.

Her dad called from downstairs. "Maya! Your ride's here!"

When she climbed into Jordan's car, the air already smelled like citrusy cologne and nervous energy. Tyler was in the backseat, vibrating like he'd consumed five energy drinks.

"Sup," Maya said, aiming for casual.

"Hey!" Jordan's eyes flicked to her, then back to the road. "You look... nice."

Nice. She'd take it.

They pulled up to Kiara's house, where the pre-game party was in full swing. Someone had spread out a weird assortment of snacks on the kitchen counter. Maya zeroed in on a bowl of orange fruit chunks.

"What's this?" she asked, popping one in her mouth.

Kiara burst out laughing. "That's papaya. Tyler brought it from his mom's grocery store. Said it's 'exotic.'"

Maya's face heated up. It tasted like someone had mixed a banana with soap. But Tyler was watching her, looking weirdly hopeful, so she forced a smile and reached for another piece.

"It's... interesting," she managed.

"Bear with it," Tyler grinned, using his awful catchphrase again. "It grows on you."

Jordan snorted. "Dude, you said that about your deodorant too, and we all know how that turned out."

The whole group cracked up. Maya felt her shoulders relax. Maybe tonight wouldn't be a complete train wreck.

Then someone accidentally knocked over the vitamin gummies from her open bag, scattering them across the floor like orange confetti.

For a second, everyone stared. Then Tyler popped one in his mouth. "Hey, free snacks!"

Maya laughed so hard her sides hurt. Sometimes the worst moments turned into the best stories.

As they walked toward the gym together, papaya aftertaste and all, Maya realized this was just the beginning. High school wouldn't be perfect, but with friends who could laugh through the awkward stuff, she'd be okay.

She even bear-hugged Tyler when he tried to claim papaya was actually good. Total lie. But he knew that, and she knew that, and somehow, that was enough.
