The Papaya Incident

Maya stared at the cafeteria table, her newly dyed orange hair frizzy from humidity. Freshman year was supposed to be her glow-up era, but so far it was mostly just awkward.

"What is THAT?" pointed Brianna, whose family owned half the real estate in town and sat comfortably at the top of our school's social pyramid. "It looks like... alien guts."

"It's papaya," Maya mumbled, face burning. Her mom had packed it, claiming it was 'exotic and sophisticated.' Instead, Maya looked like she was munching on radioactive slime while everyone else had normal lunches like chips and sandwiches.

The table erupted. 'Papaya Girl' became her instant nickname, circulating through texts and Snapchats before lunch even ended. Maya spent the rest of the day hiding in the bathroom, calculating how long until she could transfer schools.

But then came home room, where she met River—nonbinary, with silver contacts and exactly zero concern for the pyramid. "Papaya's actually fire," they said. "My abuela makes it with lime and chili. You just gotta know how to eat it."

"They were laughing at me."

"They laugh at everything. Brienna once choked on a grape and denied it for three weeks."

Maya cracked a smile. Maybe she'd survive.

Until Saturday. When her dog Mango—a chubby golden rescue who believed he was royalty—escaped during her neighborhood stroll. He barreled straight through Brienna's perfectly manicured garden party, wearing Maya's favorite orange hair tie around his neck like a collar.

The entire freshman class was there. Mango knocked over a fruit bowl, sending papayas everywhere.

Maya wanted to die. Instead, she found herself laughing so hard she couldn't breathe. River was there too, capturing Mango's papaya-induced rampage on video.

"That's viral content," River said. "Not 'embarrassing Maya' viral. Like, actually funny. You want me to tag you?"

Maya hesitated. Then: "Yeah."

The video blew up. Not in a 'laughing at Maya' way, but in a 'this chaotic dog and his papaya chaos is iconic' way. People started approaching her in the hallway. "Is that your dog? He's hilarious."

Monday, Brianna actually acknowledged her. "Your dog is a menace."

"Thanks?"

"I mean, he ruined my mom's garden party. It was kind of awesome."

Maya sat with River at lunch. River had brought papaya with lime and chili. "Try it the right way this time."

It was delicious.

The pyramid didn't matter anymore. Maya had orange hair, a viral dog, and a friend who knew how to properly eat fruit. That was enough.
