The Papaya Incident

runningpapayaiphonecat

Jordan was running late—again. Track practice had gone overtime, and now she had exactly seven minutes to get across campus, grab something edible from the cafeteria, and make it to AP Chem without looking like a total disaster.

Her iphone buzzed in her pocket. Probably another text from Kylie asking where she was. Jordan's thumb hovered over the screen, but she didn't check. If she looked now and saw Kylie had already found someone else to sit with at lunch, her whole day would be ruined. Again.

The cafeteria line was winding down, but they still had fruit. Jordan grabbed the first thing she saw—some weird yellow-orange thing she'd never actually tried before. Papaya. Fancy. Exotic. Definitely not something she'd normally touch, but anything was better than facing AP Chem with her stomach growling loud enough for everyone to hear.

She was practically sprinting down the hallway when something moved in her peripheral vision. A cat. A scrawny, determined-looking orange tabby crouched by the lockers, staring at her like it knew something she didn't.

Jordan slowed. "Hey little guy."

The cat didn't move. Just kept staring with those yellow eyes, completely unimpressed by her panic.

"You're not gonna tell anyone I'm late, are you?"

The cat blinked. Slowly.

"Cool. Cool cool cool."

Her iphone started buzzing again. This time she looked. Kylie: *where r u???*

Jordan stood there, cat on one side, phone buzzing in her hand, papaya in her backpack, heart still racing from the run. Something about this moment felt incredibly stupid and also kind of perfect. Like, why was she so stressed about being on time and impressing people when there was a stray cat judging her life choices and she was about to eat a fruit she'd never even tried before?

She took a bite of the papaya right there. It was sweet and weird and kind of mushy and honestly, not terrible. Not amazing either, but definitely interesting. Different.

The cat finally stood up, stretched, and walked away like it had better places to be.

Jordan typed back: *on my way. had a thing. with a cat. long story.*

She wasn't running anymore. She was just walking, papaya in hand, five minutes late to Chem, feeling weirdly okay with all of it.
