The Papaya Incident

bullhairpapayaspylightning

The lightning cracked across the Manila skyline as Elena stood outside her husband's home office, the door cracked open just an inch. She wasn't usually the jealous type—she'd rolled her eyes when her friend Sarah suggested installing spy apps on their partners' phones. But something about David's recent business trips to the Philippines had felt off. He came back distant, smelling of tropical fruit and expensive hotel soap.

Inside, David's laptop glowed in the dark. Elena should walk away. She should trust the twelve years of marriage, the lazy Sundays, the way he still held her hand during scary movies. But her feet stayed planted.

"That's complete bull, Marcus." David's voice carried through the door. "The board won't buy it."

Elena's heart hammered. Was this about work? Or something else?

"I'm telling you, the papaya farm is a front. The money trail leads back to shell companies in the Caymans." He paused. "Send Chloe the file. She's our best shot at exposing this before the merger completes."

Chloe. The name hit Elena like a physical blow. His new executive assistant. Twenty-six, with perfect highlighted hair and a laugh that seemed genuinely amused by David's terrible puns. Elena had seen them together at the holiday party—standing too close, sharing that look.

Another flash of lightning illuminated the hallway. Elena's fingers trembled as she pushed the door open.

"David?"

He jumped, slamming his laptop shut. "Elena? What are you—"

"Who's Chloe?"

"What?" His face went pale. "She's junior legal. Why?"

"You mentioned a file. A papaya farm."

Understanding dawned. "Oh god." He ran a hand through his hair, suddenly looking exhausted. "I should have told you. The corporate whistleblower case—it's bigger than we thought. The company's been laundering money through tropical fruit plantations across Southeast Asia. Chloe's helping coordinate evidence with the authorities."

Elena stared at him. "You're working with the DOJ?"

"Protective custody might be next. The board suspects someone's leaking." He reached for her hand. "I wanted to keep you out of it. Out of danger."

"You idiot." She squeezed his fingers. "You don't get to decide what risks I take anymore. We're in this together, remember?"

The thunder finally rolled overhead, but the storm inside had already broken. "Together," he agreed, pulling her close. "Always."
