The Papaya Incident

The papaya sat on the white marble countertop, half-eaten and oxidizing to brown where Maria had sliced it three hours ago. Outside, rain slashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Miami beach house, blurring the line between sky and sea. Water everywhere — in the ocean beyond, falling from above, collecting in the inadequate drainage channels along the terrace.

"You're going to look at it eventually," Leah said, not turning from her position at the window. She held her wine glass like a weapon.

Maria's iPhone 14 Pro lay face up on the coffee table, screen lighting up every few minutes with new notifications. None from him. Not anymore.

"He was my best friend," Maria said, her voice flat. "Before we started dating, I mean. We were friends for two years first."

"And now he's sleeping with your assistant. Your assistant who's twenty-three. The one who, may I remind you, you mentored."

"I know, Leah. I was there when I saw the texts."

The papaya had been a gift from the local market — Maria had been so excited to find it perfectly ripe, had planned to serve it for breakfast with fresh lime and coconut. That was yesterday, before the phone fell out of his jacket pocket when he'd thrown it over the back of the sofa. Before curiosity had become a reflex. Before three years of relationship had dissolved in twenty minutes of scrolling.

"What are you going to do?" Leah asked finally.

Maria picked up her iPhone. The water continued its assault against the glass. She thought about how they'd bought this house together last spring, how he'd planted the small papaya tree in the backyard that had already grown three feet. How she'd trusted him with everything.

"I'm going to eat the rest of that papaya," she said, "and then I'm going to call a lawyer."

Leah turned from the window, something like relief crossing her face. "I'll get the lime."
