The Papaya Incident

hatpapayabear

Maya pulled her dad's oversized trucker **hat** lower over her forehead, desperately trying to disappear into the cafeteria chaos. Third week at Northwood High, and she was still basically invisible. That was fine. Invisible was safe. Invisible meant nobody noticed you had zero friends and ate lunch with a book propped open.

"Yo, hat girl!"

Crap. The visibility spell had broken.

Maya looked up to see Chloe—the Chloe, who ran the student council and had somehow made(varsity volleyball as a sophomore) standing at her table with her squad."

"We need you for the TikTok," Chloe said, like this was the most normal sentence ever.

"The what now?"

"The food challenge video. Marcus bet he could eat anything, and we need something actually disgusting." Chloe's eyes lit up. "And my cousin works at that fancy grocery store—brought us a **papaya**."

The entire table erupted in dramatic groans.

"A papaya? What even IS that?" someone whined.

"It's literally the most mid fruit ever," another person agreed.

Maya's grandma in the Philippines served papaya every summer. It wasn't gross—it was perfect, sprinkled with calamansi and a little salt. But she knew better than to say that. She knew exactly what happened when you were the weird kid who defended weird food.

Chloe was still waiting. "So, you in?"

And suddenly Maya was tired of being invisible. Tired of shrinking. Her dad always said, "Small acts, hija. That's how you **bear** witness to who you are."

"Actually," Maya said, her voice doing that thing where it cracked like she was twelve again, "papaya's fire if you prepare it right."

The table went quiet.

"Seriously?" Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Prove it."

So Maya did. She dumped salt on the papaya chunks, squeezed the lime she'd snagged from the taco bar, and took the biggest bite of her life. The table watched like she was defusing a bomb.

She swallowed. "It's hitting different, right?"

Chloe tried it. Her eyes went wide. "Wait, this slaps?"

By the end of lunch, Maya had accidentally started Northwood's first exotic fruit appreciation club. Still invisible, maybe, but at least now she was invisible doing something cool.
