The Papaya Incident

Maya's lunchbox was basically a walking wellness ad. While everyone else had Cheetos and Gatorade, she had sliced papaya in a reusable container and a vitamin D gummy shaped like a teddy bear. Her mom was going through her 'holistic living' phase, which meant Maya was basically an unwilling participant in a biological experiment.

'Do you ever eat, like, normal food?' Jason asked, sliding into the seat across from her. Jason, who wore the same Led Zeppelin shirt three times a week and had dimples that could end wars.

Maya felt the heat rise to her cheeks. 'My mom's on this kick where we're basically not allowed to enjoy anything that tastes good.' She picked up a piece of papaya with her fork. It sat there, bright orange and judging her.

Jason laughed, and Maya noticed his eyes were actually hazel, not brown like she'd thought from three rows back in AP Bio. 'That's rough. My parents think frozen pizza counts as a vegetable group.'

The moment stretched, comfortable and terrifying all at once. Maya's brain was screaming at her to say something cool, something that would make her seem interesting and mysterious and not like the girl whose mom packed fruit for lunch.

'I could give you some,' she heard herself saying. 'If you want to try it. It's actually pretty good.' She immediately wanted to dissolve into the cafeteria floor.

Jason's eyebrows went up. 'Yeah? Sure, why not.' He leaned forward, and Maya realized with growing horror that she was going to have to feed him papaya in the middle of seventh period lunch.

Her hand shook slightly as she extended the fork. Jason took the bite like this was completely normal, like girls didn't hand him exotic fruit every day. He chewed thoughtfully, and Maya's heart was doing something concerning against her ribs.

'Huh,' he said. 'That's actually... kinda amazing.' He grinned. 'Your mom's onto something.'

The bell rang, and Maya spent the rest of the day in a haze, replaying the moment on an endless loop. She caught Jason's eye in AP Bio and he gave her a tiny smile, barely there but definitely real.

That night at dinner, Maya's mom asked about her day, and Maya found herself reaching for more papaya. Maybe being different wasn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe, just maybe, it was exactly the right thing.
