The Papaya Incident

Maya's stomach did nervous backflips as she stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her towel like a lifeline. This was it—Jason's legendary end-of-summer blowout, and she was finally invited. The invite list had been carefully curated like some exclusive club, and somehow, she'd made the cut.

"Yo, Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Jason called from the water, droplets sparkling on his arms. He was everything she wasn't—effortless, confident, the kind of guy who somehow made neon swim trunks look intentional.

She hesitated. Her mom had force-fed her a weird "health smoothie" that morning—**spinach**, something green, and absolutely disastrous for anyone planning to look cute in a swimsuit. What if it turned her teeth green? What if—

"Maya!" Her best friend Zoe appeared beside her, practically vibrating with energy. "Stop overthinking. We look amazing, we're gonna have fun, and nobody cares about your teeth."

They jumped in together. The water was perfect, and for the first hour, Maya actually forgot to be self-conscious. She laughed at Tyler's terrible jokes, played an aggressive game of volleyball, and even managed to exchange actual words with Jason that weren't just "hey" or "thanks."

Then came the food.

Maya's stomach growled as she eyed the snack table, but her options were limited. The spread was... eclectic. Someone had brought a whole **papaya**, which nobody seemed to know how to eat. Tyler was already trying to carve it like a jack-o'-lantern.

"Bro, what even IS this?" he asked, holding up a slice. "It tastes like melon had a baby with a soap."

Maya's phone buzzed. Her brother: *Mom says dinner's ready. She made that salmon thing. Also, your **goldfish** looks sad. Feed him.*

"You good?" Jason asked, suddenly beside her. Too close. His arm brushed hers, and her brain short-circuited.

"Yeah! Just... family stuff."

"Cool." He paused. "Hey, I was gonna ask—do you want to watch a movie later? My parents' **cable** has every channel, and there's this horror marathon..."

The words hung in the humid air. Maya's heart pounded. Was this...? Was he—?

"Maya!" Zoe whisper-yelled from across the pool. "Your mom's here!"

The moment shattered like glass. Maya's ride was early, of course, because the universe had perfect timing.

"I have to go," she said, hating the disappointment on Jason's face. "But—text me? About the movie?"

His expression shifted. "Yeah. Totally."

As she climbed out of the pool, dripping and awkward, Maya caught Zoe's eye. Her best friend gave her a subtle thumbs-up.

The night wasn't over. It was just beginning.
