The Papaya Incident

Elena sat alone at the kitchen counter, the remains of a papaya parfait in front of her. Two weeks ago, Marcus would have been sitting beside her, stealing bites from her spoon. Now, the apartment felt cavernous without his clunky boots by the door, without Barnaby—their orange tabby cat—winding between their legs.

She'd started eating spinach salads for lunch, something Marcus had always refused to touch. "Rabbit food," he'd called it. Now it was all she could stomach.

The private investigator's report lay on the counter beside her fruit spoon. Marcus wasn't having an affair. He was something worse—a corporate spy, leaking biotech research to a competitor. Three years of marriage, and she'd never known he was capable of that kind of betrayal. Not just of her, but of everyone who'd trusted him.

Barnaby jumped onto the counter, nudging her hand. "At least you're honest," she whispered, scratching behind his ears. "You want food, affection, and a warm patch of sunlight. No hidden agendas."

She remembered their first apartment, the tiny goldfish bowl they'd kept on the windowsill. Marcus had named the fish Prometheus, claiming it represented their ambition to build something meaningful together. The fish had lasted two weeks before Marcus forgot to feed it during a crunch period at work. Elena had found it floating belly-up when she returned from a business trip.

"Should have seen it then," she said to Barnaby. "The forgetting. The prioritizing."

Her phone buzzed—a text from her lawyer: *He wants to talk. Says there's an explanation.*

Elena deleted the message. Some stories didn't need explaining; they needed ending. She scraped the last sweet bite of papaya from the bowl, fed Barnaby a treat, and stood up. Tomorrow she'd change the locks. Tonight, she'd finally get a full night's sleep.
