The Papaya Incident

The chemo took her hair first, then her marriage, but it couldn't touch the way her golden retriever, Barnaby, still pressed his warm flank against her each night as she fell asleep. Lila had stopped looking in mirrors months ago, but she still saw herself reflected in her mother's worried eyes during their weekly video calls.

"You look tired, Lila."

"I'm fine, Mom. The new job is going well."

The new job wasn't going well. The new job was a nightmare ofๅ‡่ฃ…, of crafting wholesome content for a wellness brand that sold overpriced supplements to women terrified of aging. The irony wasn't lost on her.

Then came the papaya incident.

She'd been tasked with writing an Instagram caption about how the fruit's enzymes could reverse aging from the inside out. Complete nonsense, but the client loved it. Lila stared at the photo of the halved papaya, its black seeds glistening like something malignant, and suddenly she was back in Hawaii with David, their last trip before the diagnosis. They'd stayed in a cottage surrounded by papaya trees. David had made love to her on the lanai while papaya fell soft and heavy in the grass nearby, bruising themselves against the earth.

She typed a different caption instead: "Sometimes things rot from the inside, and no amount of tropical fruit can fix what's broken."

Barnaby whined at her feet, sensing the shift in the room's gravity. Lila hit publish, then gathered her wig from the hook by the door, her dog's leash from the bowl, and walked out into the morning sun without looking back at the computer screen that had held her prisoner for six months.

Her hair was starting to grow back in soft tufts, like new grass after fire. She touched it, then Barnaby's silken ears, and thought about how some things, once broken, could still find their way back to the light.
