The Papaya Garden's Secret Friend
Lily loved her grandmother's garden, especially the papaya tree that grew taller each day. Its green fruit hung like little lanterns, waiting to turn golden and sweet. Every afternoon after school, Lily would run to check on them.
One cloudy afternoon, Lily noticed something strange. A small figure shuffled between the plants. It looked pale and droopy, moving slowly with stiff arms.
'A zombie!' Lily gasped, hiding behind the papaya tree.
But this zombie wasn't like the scary ones in movies. It was tiny, no bigger than a pumpkin, and wore a floppy flower hat. Instead of saying 'brains,' it made sad little squeaking sounds.
Lily stepped closer. 'Are you okay?'
The creature looked up with big, tired eyes. It held up a wilted flower as if offering a gift.
'You're not scary,' Lily said softly. 'You're lonely.'
She realized this wasn't a real zombie—it was a garden sprite! Without enough sunshine, the little guardian had become droopy and weak. The papaya tree's leaves had grown so thick they blocked the light.
'I know what you need!' Lily rushed to the garden shed and returned with pruning shears. Carefully, she trimmed some branches, letting golden sunlight stream through.
The sprite's eyes brightened. It stretched its arms, and color returned to its cheeks. It did a happy little dance, then scampered up the papaya tree to pick the ripest fruit.
'For you!' it chirped, handing Lily the perfect papaya.
'What's your name?' Lily asked.
The sprite pointed to its heart, then to hers. 'Friend,' it said clearly.
Lily smiled. Every day after school, she visited her new friend. They tended the garden together, sharing stories and ripe papayas. The sprite showed her secret paths between the flowers, and Lily taught it human games.
The other kids thought Lily had an imaginary friend, but she knew the truth. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you have to look really closely to see.
And whenever anyone asked about the 'zombie' in her grandmother's garden, Lily would just wink and offer them a sweet slice of papaya, straight from her friend's tree.
