The Papaya-Colored Sky

Maya's fingers trembled as she gripped her iPhone, the screen glowing with the unopened text from Jake. Three days of radio silence since their awkward almost-kiss at the park, and she was losing her mind. Her best friend Priya had been running commentary on the situation like ESPN, but Maya just needed to rip the band-aid off.

"Open it already," Priya said from across the lunch table, poking at her fruit cup. "You're being so dramatic."

"I'm not being dramatic!" Maya protested, though her racing heart betrayed her. "What if he's ghosting? What if he's letting me down easy? What if—"

"What if you're overthinking and he's just a dumb teenage boy who's scared?" Priya popped a piece of papaya into her mouth. "Life's not that deep, Maya."

That afternoon, Maya found herself running—her escape, her meditation, her therapy. As her sneakers slapped against the pavement, the sky darkened to that strange papaya-orange color that only comes before a storm. Wind whipped her hair, and somewhere in the distance, lightning fractured the sky like cracks in a broken screen.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Jake.

She slowed to a walk, chest heaving, and read his message: "Sorry I took forever. I was scared because I really like you and didn't want to mess it up."

Maya stood there in the middle of the sidewalk as rain began to fall, her heart doing something that felt suspiciously like lightning striking her chest. All that worry, all that overthinking—and he was just scared too.

Another text popped up: "Want to hang out tomorrow? Maybe finish what we started at the park?"

Maya grinned as the rain soaked through her shirt, and texted back, "Absolutely."

Sometimes, she realized, the scariest things—like falling for someone, or saying what you actually mean—could also be the most electric. And sometimes, papaya-colored skies were just announcing the beginning of something amazing instead of warning about a storm.
