The Papaya Cable Incident
The coaxial cable hung from the wall like a dead snake, and I was pretty sure my social life died along with it. It was Friday night of junior year, and I was stuck at home while everyone else was at Jake's party. Again.
"Maya, just call the cable company," my mom said, wandering in with a papaya. Like a literal papaya. Who even buys those? "Try this, by the way. It's supposed to be exotic."
I glared at the cable. "They can't come until Monday. I'm missing everything."
Outside my window, a stray cat—the one I'd secretly named Freya—sat on the fence like she was judging my entire existence. She'd been showing up for weeks, watching me with these knowing yellow eyes.
My phone buzzed. Quinn, the cute sophomore from my English class, was finally in the group chat I'd been dying to join. But my video chat kept freezing because of the stupid cable situation. I was about to rage-quit when I spotted my brother's old ethernet cable in his room.
What happened next was both brilliant and unhinged: I rigged his cable through the hallway window, balancing my laptop on a stack of textbooks while the wind howled. It worked. I crashed Quinn's playlist rotation just as someone mentioned they were making fruit smoothies with whatever they had.
Without thinking, I grabbed the papaya.
"Watch this," I said, chopping up the exotic fruit my mom had bought and tossing it in. "My mom literally just brought me this. Who eats papaya?"
The video froze, then unfroze—everyone was losing it. "You're eating PAPAYA on a FRIDAY NIGHT?" Jake typed.
"Wait," Quinn said, voice soft. "You see that cat outside your window?"
"Yeah. Freya. She's always there."
"That's my cat. She ran away three months ago."
My heart did this actual flutter thing. "No way."
"WAY. What's your address? I'm coming over."
Fifteen minutes later, Quinn showed up with a proper cable (like, who carries those around?), rescued Freya, and stayed until 2 AM talking about music and weird fruit and how we both felt like we never quite fit in anywhere.
The papaya smoothie was actually disgusting. But that accidental cable fix? It connected me to something way better than the party I'd been obsessing over.
