The Papaya Bet
Lena's stomach did backflips as she stood at the edge of the padel court, clutching a borrowed racquet like it might detonate. The cool September air smelled like expensive sunscreen and teenage desperation.
"You got this, L," Maya said, though her best friend's eyes screamed you're gonna embarrass yourself in front of everyone.
The court dividers gleamed under the floodlights, and Lena's new teammates—Jenna, perfect in her matching ensemble, and Chris, who Lena had been lowkey crushing on since orientation—watched like she was about to perform surgery.
Game on.
Lena missed the ball completely on her first swing. It hit the fence with a pathetic thud.
"No worries, newbie," Chris called out, grinning. "Your form's actually fire for a first-timer."
Lena's face burned hotter than the papaya curry her mom made for dinner. The same papaya she'd bet Jenna she could work into conversation naturally before practice ended.
Smooth, Lena. Real smooth.
The game intensified. Lena actually started hitting the ball, and when she finally smashed it past Jenna for a point, the squad went feral.
"She's built different!" Maya yelled.
But then—disaster. The ball sailed toward the expensive LED scoreboard mounted courtside. Lena lunged. She made contact.
The scoreboard flickered and died.
Half the court lights followed. A loose power cable dangled from the fixture like a guilty snake.
Dead silence. Then Jenna's voice cut through: "Bro. You literally killed the lights."
Lena's stomach dropped through her shoes.
But Chris just laughed. "That's legendary, actually. Coach is gonna freak, but that's literally the most interesting thing that's happened at padel practice all year."
"My dad works with AV setups," Maya whispered. "We can fix it before anyone notices."
And there, crouched in the shadows with a stripped cable and borrowed electrical tape, Lena realized she hadn't just made the team. She'd found her people.
Later, when Maya asked how Lena's first practice went, she couldn't help herself.
"Honestly? It was ripe with potential. Almost as sweet as... papaya?"
Maya stared. Then both girls dissolved into giggles as Lena's phone buzzed—Jenna, adding her to the group chat.
Squad goals unlocked.
