The Papaya at Sunset

The infinity pool shimmered like liquid glass, blurring the boundary between the turquoise water and the Caribbean Sea beyond. Elena sat on the edge, her legs submerged, watching the ripples distort her reflection. Thirty-five years old and already feeling like her life had been lived by someone else.

Her iPhone buzzed on the lounge chair behind her. Probably Mark, texting another flimsy excuse about staying late at the office. As if she didn't already know he was with Sarah from accounting. As if the entire firm didn't know.

She reached for the fruit plate she'd ordered an hour ago. The papaya sat there, its bright orange flesh glistening in the setting sun, speckled with tiny black seeds like secrets waiting to be spilled. She'd always hated papaya—the way it smelled sweet and sickly, like something fermenting. Mark loved it. Used to eat it every morning when they first started dating, back when he still pretended to enjoy things she liked.

"Mind if I join you?"

Elena jumped. A man stood there—maybe fifty, silver-haired, expensive watch glinting. Not hotel staff. Another guest, alone like her.

"Please," she said, gesturing to the empty lounge chair beside hers.

He sat. "I'm Daniel."

"Elena."

"You look like someone who's been stood up."

"Worse. Married to someone who forgot to show up."

Daniel nodded. "I've been there. My ex-wife, she forgot to show up for years before I finally noticed."

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in bruised purples. In that golden twilight, Elena felt something shift. Not hope—she was too old for that—but something like permission.

"Want to finish this papaya?" she asked. "I've always hated them."

Daniel smiled, and for the first time in three years, Elena didn't check her iPhone.
