The Papaya Apocalypse

Maya dragged herself through the cafeteria like a **zombie**, finals week turning her brain into something resembling expired yogurt. Three AP classes, zero sleep, and now Carlos was waving a weird fruit in her face.

"Try this," he said, all bright-eyed and impossible. "It's a **papaya**. My abuela brought them from the farmer's market."

She stared at the orange-fleshed fruit suspiciously. The same Carlos she'd been low-key crushing on since October, sitting so close their knees brushed under the table. This was supposed to be her moment—smooth, chill, effortlessly vibing. Instead, she looked like she'd crawled out of a grave.

"What if I hate it?" she countered, managing to sound only somewhat unhinged.

"Then you hate it." He shrugged, that easy grin that made her stomach do something complicated. "No big deal. But you gotta try new stuff, Maya. Otherwise you're just existing."

The bell rang. Carlos popped a slice in his mouth, stood up, and left his tray behind with the papaya sitting there like a challenge.

Maya grabbed the fruit and stuffed it into her backpack.

After school, behind the bleachers where the weird kids hung out, she finally tried it. Sweet, musky, nothing like she expected. Not terrible, not amazing—just new. Just like Carlos's words echoed in her head: *otherwise you're just existing.*

She pulled out her phone. Hey. You were right about the papaya.

His response came instantly: I knew you'd come around. Same time tomorrow?

Maya smiled, her first real smile all week. Something was shifting. She wasn't just surviving anymore.

**Zombie** mode deactivated. **Papaya** approved. **Orange** sunset painting everything in possibilities.
