The Papara

vitaminwaterpapaya

Maya's mom had pushed the Tupperware container toward her like it was contraband. "Trust me, babe. The **vitamin** C alone'll save you from becoming a glowing lobster by noon."

Maya stared at the bright orange cubes like they were radioactive. "Mom, nobody eats **papaya** at a pool party. This is social suicide."

But here she was, sitting on the edge of Chloe's patio, clutching her container of weird fruit while everyone else floated in the pool with cans of soda. The summer heat pressed down like a physical weight, making everything shimmer. Maya had spent forty-five minutes on her hair this morning, and already the humidity was conspiring against her.

"Hey."

Maya jumped. Danny from her history class had materialized beside her, dripping pool **water**, his hair plastered to his forehead in a way that shouldn't be working but absolutely was. "What's that?"

"Nothing." Maya tried to hide the container. "Just... weird fruit. My mom's obsessed with antioxidants lately."

"Let me try." He held out a hand, droplets tracking down his arm.

"Seriously? It's gross."

"I'll try anything once." Danny's grin was all lopsided confidence. "Unless it's actually poisoned. In which case, I will haunt you forever."

Maya's face flamed hotter than the pavement. She handed him a piece, watched him pop it into his mouth.

He chewed. Considered. "Actually... not terrible? Kind of like if cantaloupe and mango had a glow-up."

"Right?!" The words burst out before she could stop them. "That's exactly what I said!"

"Maya." His pronunciation wasn't quite right—"MY-zuh" instead of "MAY-uh"—but he was saying her name, and somehow that felt like something. "You coming in? The water's actually decent. Not Atlantic Ocean decent, but decent."

"I didn't bring a suit."

"So wear your clothes. Everyone's doing it." He nodded toward the pool, where half the group was indeed fully clothed and screaming about hair products. "Your papara awaits."

"Papaya."

"Whatever." Danny stood up, extending a hand. "Coming? Or are you gonna guard that fruit with your life?"

Maya looked at the container in her lap, bright orange cubes catching sunlight. Then she looked at Danny, at the pool, at everyone splashing and laughing without checking if they looked cool doing it.

She took a piece of papaya herself, tasted it—really tasted it—and stood up.

"Yeah," she said, and something in her chest unlocked. "I'm coming."
