The Palm Who Could Dream

palmcatrunning

In the middle of a tiny island in the middle of the deep blue ocean stood a very lonely palm tree. She was the only tree on the island, and while she loved watching the waves dance and the stars twinkle, she wished for someone to talk to.

Every evening, a ginger cat came running along the shore, chasing seagulls and leaping over tiny crabs. The palm tree watched the cat's fur glow like sunset gold as he bounded across the sand. She wished she could run too.

One night, something magical happened. A shooting star zipped across the sky and landed right at the palm's feet. The star was tiny and glowing.

"Make a wish!" the star whispered.

"I wish to make a friend," said the palm.

The star swirled around the palm tree, and suddenly she could feel something new — roots that could wiggle! She pulled herself right out of the sand.

The next morning, when the ginger cat came running along the beach as usual, he stopped and stared. A tree was walking toward him!

"Hello!" called the palm. "I've watched you running every day. You look like you're having so much fun."

The cat's eyes grew wide. "You can talk? And walk?"

"Today is my first day for both!" The palm tree swayed happily. "Would you like to be friends?"

The ginger cat purred so loudly it sounded like a tiny motor. "I've always wanted a tree friend! Do you want to see the secret caves?"

"Oh yes!" The palm tree's leaves fluttered with excitement.

And so they set off together, the cat running circles around his new friend as the palm tree shuffled along the sand. They explored caves full of glittering crystals, climbed cliffs to touch the clouds, and made friends with dolphins who splashed them both.

That night, back on the beach, the cat curled up against the palm tree's trunk and fell fast asleep. The palm tree felt warm and happy. Being lonely was hard, but having a friend was easy.

She looked up at the stars and whispered, "Thank you."

Sometimes the best wishes don't change who you are — they just help you find who you've been looking for.
