The Palm Tree Sphinx

Lily loved running along the beach at sunrise, her bare feet splashing in the cool waves. One morning, something golden glinted in the sand beneath a swaying palm tree.

Curious, Lily dug with her hands and uncovered a small creature no bigger than her hand—a tiny sphinx with soft golden fur, sparkling wings, and wise amber eyes. The sphinx blinked and stretched.

"Thank you for freeing me!" the sphinx squeaked. "I'm Cleo, and I've been stuck in that sand for three hundred years!"

Lily's dog Barnaby came bounding over, barking happily. Cleo flinched, but Barnaby gently nudged her with his wet nose.

"He's my friend," Lily explained. "I'm Lily. What's a sphinx doing in Florida?"

Cleo's wings fluttered nervously. "A magician trapped me far from home in Egypt. I need to return before sunset, or I'll turn back into sand forever."

Lily's heart raced. "How can we help?"

"I need three things," Cleo said. "A seashell with sunrise inside it, a feather from the clouds, and a true friend's wish."

Lily and Barnaby immediately started searching. Lily found the perfect pink shell, still wet from morning dew. Barnaby barked at a white feather drifting down from the sky.

"The wish is yours," Lily told Cleo. "I wish for you to go home."

Cleo's eyes shimmered with gratitude. She sprinkled golden dust over the shell and feather, which began to glow. The sphinx grew until she was lion-sized, her wings spreading like clouds.

"Climb on my back!" Cleo called. "You and your faithful friend deserve to see the world."

Lily and Barnaby soared through pink and orange clouds, over oceans and deserts, until the pyramids appeared below them. Cleo landed gently by the Sphinx.

"You saved me," Cleo whispered, pressing her warm forehead against Lily's. "Friends like you are rarer than magic."

She slipped a small golden charm into Lily's hand—a tiny sphinx. "If you ever need me, hold this tight and make a wish."

In a swirl of stardust, Cleo was gone. Lily found herself back on the beach, palm trees swaying in the morning breeze. Barnaby licked her cheek.

Running home for breakfast, Lily knew the world was full of magic—but the best magic of all was having a friend to share it with.
