The Palm Tree Sphinx

Lila loved her dog, Barnaby. He was a scruffy golden terrier with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down. Every afternoon, they walked to the park together, but today was different. Today, they discovered something magical.

Behind the old oak tree, where no one ever went, stood a giant palm tree. That was strange enough—palm trees didn't grow in their town! But stranger still was what sat in its branches.

A sphinx.

Not like the ones in books with lion bodies and human heads. This sphinx was small, no bigger than Barnaby, with soft golden fur and enormous amber eyes. She looked lonely.

"Hello," said Lila, because her mother had taught her to be brave and kind.

The sphinx's ears perked up. "Hello. I've been waiting for someone to find me."

Barnaby wagged his tail and sniffed the sphinx's paw. She didn't mind at all.

"I'm Lila. This is Barnaby."

"I'm Cleo," said the sphinx. "I'm a very long way from home."

Cleo explained that she had fallen asleep in her favorite palm tree in Egypt and woken up in this strange new place. She couldn't fly all the way home—she was too little.

"We'll help you," Lila promised.

For three weeks, Lila and Barnaby visited Cleo every day. They brought her fruit and blankets. They told her stories about their town. They showed her their favorite hiding spots. And Cleo shared something wonderful: she could answer any question about anything.

"Why do dogs chase their tails?" Lila asked once.

"Because they're chasing joy," Cleo said. "And sometimes, joy spins in circles."

"Why are you called a sphinx?"

"Because we're the keepers of secrets and the makers of friends."

On the fourth week, Cleo said, "I know how to go home now. I made a friend here. That's the secret."

She hugged Lila and nuzzled Barnaby's floppy ear. Then she climbed to the top of the palm tree, spread her wings, and shimmered into gold dust that swirled up into the sky.

But something wonderful happened next. The palm tree bloomed golden flowers that never faded.

Now whenever Lila and Barnaby walk past, they hear a whisper in the wind: *Friendship is the magic that bridges every world.*

And Lila knows it's true. The best adventures aren't the ones where you find treasure. They're the ones where you find a friend.
