The Palm Tree's Secret Gift
Maya loved visiting the old palm tree at the edge of her village. Every day after school, she would sit beneath its drooping leaves and tell it stories. The palm tree was the tallest tree on the island, and Maya believed it could hear everything.
One afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. The air felt thick and strange. Maya ran to her special spot just as the first drops of rain began to fall. She watched in wonder as brilliant flashes of lightning streaked across the sky like glowing paintbrushes.
Then it happened — a bolt of lightning struck the very top of the palm tree! Maya gasped and covered her eyes, afraid her friend had been hurt. But when she looked up, something magical was happening.
Where the lightning had struck, the palm tree's leaves now glowed with a soft, golden light. And from its fronds, crystal-clear water began to trickle down. This wasn't ordinary rainwater — it sparkled and shimmered like liquid stars.
An old woman from the village appeared beside Maya. "The palm tree has chosen you," she said with a knowing smile. "Once every hundred years, lightning gifts this tree with magical water. One drink can heal any hurt, but only if used with a kind heart."
Maya's eyes widened. She thought of her little brother, who had been sick with a fever for days. Without hesitation, she cupped her hands beneath the glowing leaves and caught the magical water.
That night, Maya's brother drank the water and immediately felt better. But Maya didn't stop there. She shared the rest with neighbors who were hurt or sad. By morning, the entire village was celebrating.
The next day, Maya returned to thank the palm tree. Its leaves no longer glowed, but it stood just as tall and proud as before. Maya wrapped her arms around its trunk.
"Thank you for teaching me," she whispered. "True magic isn't about keeping wonderful things for yourself. It's about sharing them."
From that day on, whenever Maya saw lightning during a storm, she would smile and remember her friend the palm tree, and how the most powerful magic of all is a kind heart.
