The Palm Tree's Secret Gift
Lila lived in a house where the backyard kissed the sky. A giant palm tree towered over her fence, its green fronds dancing with the wind like hundreds of friendly hands waving hello. Every morning, Lila would press her own palm against the rough bark and whisper, 'Good morning, friend.'
One summer afternoon, Lila's fluffy dog Mango started barking excitedly at something hidden among the palm's broad leaves. Curious, Lila climbed onto the lowest branch and discovered something magical—an orange kitten with the brightest, softest fur she'd ever seen, purring like a tiny motor.
'How did you get up here?' Lila wondered aloud. The kitten simply rubbed its orange head against her hand, as if thanking her for the rescue. Lila carefully carried the kitten down, while Mango wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.
That evening, Lila's abuela cut open a ripe papaya for dessert. Its sweet fragrance filled the kitchen. The orange kitten, now safely curled in Lila's lap, opened one eye and let out the tiniest meow.
Abuela laughed, her white hair catching the golden light from the window. 'This little one chose you, mi amor. Animals know who has the kindest heart.'
Lila looked at Mango, who was already asleep beside the kitten, and at the papaya's sweet flesh glistening in her bowl. She realized that sometimes the best gifts come when we least expect them—whether found high in a palm tree or discovered in the quiet moments of a summer day.
That night, as the orange kitten purred on her pillow, Lila whispered to the palm tree outside, 'Thank you for the secret gift.' And somewhere in the warm breeze, the leaves rustled back, 'You're welcome, kind friend.'
