The Palm Tree's Secret Friend
Maya loved the old palm tree behind the baseball field. Its rough bark felt like grandfather's hands, and its leaves danced in the wind like green ribbons. Every Saturday, Maya watched her brother play baseball while she sat beneath the palm tree, imagining magical worlds.
One afternoon, Maya noticed something strange. An orange rolled toward her feet—bright as sunshine, impossibly round. It rolled again, then again, as if someone was pushing it.
"Hello?" Maya called out.
From behind the palm tree peeked a green face. It had kind eyes and a crooked smile. Maya gasped. It looked like... a zombie?
"I'm Benny," the creature whispered. "I'm not scary. I just love baseball."
Maya's eyes widened. "You're a zombie? But you're nice!"
Benny nodded shyly. "I've been watching your brother's games for years. I used to play baseball too, a long time ago." His voice sounded like autumn leaves crunching.
Maya looked at Benny's tattered jersey. "Do you want to play catch with me?"
Benny's face lit up. "Really? You're not afraid?"
"My dad says friends come in all shapes and sizes," Maya said, tossing him the orange. "Let's use this. It's magical, I can feel it."
They played catch under the palm tree. The orange never bruised, never got soft. Every time Benny caught it, he laughed—a sound like gentle wind chimes.
"You're really good!" Maya said.
"Practice makes progress," Benny grinned. "Want to know a secret? This palm tree is magic too. It grew from a seed I planted when I was a kid, before... well, before I changed."
Maya hugged the palm tree's trunk. "It's our friendship tree now."
Every Saturday after that, Maya brought fresh oranges. She and Benny played catch while her brother's baseball games filled the air with cheers. No one else could see Benny—only Maya, only under the palm tree.
"What's the lesson?" Maya asked one day.
Benny thought carefully. "That magic lives in kindness and friendship. And that sometimes, the best friends are the ones you least expect."
Maya smiled, holding an orange in each palm. "And that a little imagination makes anything possible."
The palm tree rustled its leaves, as if agreeing, and somewhere deep in its branches, another tiny orange began to grow—full of magic, full of friendship, full of endless possibilities.
