The Palm Tree's Secret Friend
Leo loved his iphone more than anything. He played games on it all day long, never looking up at the world around him. One summer, his parents sent him to visit his grandmother who lived in a small house by the beach.
"Put down that phone," Grandma said with a smile. "There's magic outside if you look for it."
Leo didn't believe her. But one afternoon, he sat under her giant palm tree, bored because his phone had died. A small creature with fluffy fur like a golden dog peeked out from behind the tree trunk.
"Hello!" the creature said. "I'm Piper!"
Leo gasped. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" Piper wagged his tail happily. "I'm a magical friend. I've been waiting for someone to notice me. Everyone's always staring at those little glowing boxes."
Leo felt his cheeks turn red. He realized how much he had been missing.
"Show me something magical," Leo said.
Piper led him behind the palm tree, where a tiny door was hidden in the bark. Inside was the most beautiful place Leo had ever seen — glowing flowers, singing butterflies, and trees that grew different kinds of candy.
"This is our secret garden," Piper whispered. "Will you be my friend?"
Leo's phone didn't seem so important anymore. "Yes!" he shouted.
Every day that summer, Leo played with Piper instead of his phone. They had adventures, saved baby birds, and planted magical seeds. When summer ended, Leo gave his iphone to Grandma.
"I don't need it anymore," Leo said. "I found something better."
Grandma patted his palm. "Real magic isn't on a screen, Leo. It's in the friends we make and the world we explore."
Leo waved goodbye to Piper, knowing his magical friend would always be waiting, and that the best adventures happen when you look up from your phone and really see the world.
