The Palm Tree's Perfect Pitch
Toby loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he could be found running across the grassy field behind his house, throwing his ball up and catching it again. But Toby had a problem—he was the worst player on his team. He always struck out, and the other kids laughed when he dropped the ball.
Behind Toby's house stood an enormous palm tree, the only one for miles around. Its thick trunk was covered in rough bark, and its long green leaves swished in the breeze like lazy fingers. Toby had never noticed it before—until the day his baseball sailed into its branches and got stuck.
"Great," Toby sighed, running toward the tree. "Now I've lost my favorite ball too."
He reached up to grab it, but suddenly something amazing happened. The palm tree's lowest leaf curled around the baseball and lifted it higher, almost like it was offering it back.
"You want to play?" Toby whispered, eyes wide.
The palm tree dipped its leaves—yes! Toby couldn't believe it. He grabbed his glove and positioned himself under the tree's branches.
"Ready?" he called.
The palm tree dropped the ball, and Toby caught it perfectly. They practiced for hours—Toby running back and forth, the palm tree tossing balls to him with surprising accuracy. Toby had never had so much fun.
"You're better than any coach I've ever had," Toby told the tree as the sun began to set. The palm tree seemed to stand taller, its leaves shimmering with golden light.
The next day at baseball practice, Toby's team couldn't believe their eyes. Toby caught every ball that came his way. When it was his turn to bat, he remembered the palm tree's gentle rhythm and hit the ball all the way to the fence.
"Toby!" his teammates cheered, running to congratulate him. "Where did you learn to play like that?"
Toby just smiled, thinking of his secret friend.
That evening, Toby brought his whole team to meet the palm tree. He told them about its magic, and at first they didn't believe him—until the palm tree dropped a ball right into the captain's glove.
From that day on, nobody laughed at Toby anymore. They all came to the palm tree for practice, and even though the tree couldn't really teach them everything, it taught them something more important: sometimes the best friends are the ones you least expect, and magic can be found anywhere if you're brave enough to look for it.
And whenever Toby sees a palm tree now, he always waves—just in case.
