The Palm Tree's Magic Pitch

Lily loved her backyard. In the corner stood a crooked **palm** tree that Grandpa had planted years ago. Its leaves drooped like sleepy green fingers, and Lily liked to sit beneath it and dream.

One hot afternoon, Lily sat in the **palm** tree's shade, crying. The neighborhood kids were playing **baseball** down the street, but she was too shy to join them.

"Why so sad?" a tiny voice squeaked.

Lily looked around. No one was there.

"Down here! In the bowl!"

Peering into her fishbowl on the grass, Lily gasped. Her **goldfish**, Goldie, was floating at the surface, staring right at her!

"You can talk?!" Lily whispered.

"Only when children need courage," Goldie said, flipping his tail. "I saw you watching the **baseball** game. Why not play?"

"I've never even held a bat," Lily admitted. "What if I mess up?"

The **palm** tree's leaves rustled, even though there was no wind. Suddenly, something small and round dropped from the branches—*bonk!*—right onto Lily's head.

It wasn't a coconut. It was a tiny **baseball**, glowing like a little moon.

"Pick it up!" Goldie bubbled excitedly. "This is a magic **baseball**!"

Lily picked up the glowing ball. It felt warm, like sunshine. When she squeezed it, she suddenly knew exactly how to throw.

"Go play!" Goldie cheered.

Lily marched toward the field, the magic ball in hand. The kids stopped and stared.

"Can I play?" she asked, her voice only shaking a little.

"Sure!" shouted Marcus, the team captain. "You can bat first!"

Lily stepped up to the plate, nervous but brave. When the pitch came, she swung—and *crack!* The magic ball sailed over the fence!

"Whoa!" everyone cheered.

Lily played all afternoon, making new friends with every inning. The magic ball had disappeared after her first hit, but somehow, she didn't need it anymore.

That evening, Lily sat beneath her **palm** tree again. Goldie was back to swimming silently, but he winked at her. And high in the tree's branches, three tiny **baseballs** glowed like golden stars.

Some magic, Lily realized, stays with you forever—especially the magic of trying something new.
