The Palm Tree's Magic

Lila sat under the swaying palm tree in her backyard, watching the other kids play baseball in the park nearby. She traced circles in the dirt with her toe, wishing someone would invite her to play. But everyone always said she was too little.

The palm tree's rough bark felt warm against her back. Its long green leaves danced in the breeze, making shushing sounds like secrets. Lila closed her eyes and made a wish on the gentle wind.

Suddenly, something soft and round dropped into her open palm. A baseball! But this wasn't like the ones the big kids used. This one shimmered with golden light and smelled like sunshine and magic.

"Throw me!" squeaked a tiny voice.

Lila looked around. No one was there. She looked closer at the baseball. It had tiny eyes and a smiling mouth!

"I'm Buddy!" said the magical baseball. "I'm your new friend! Catch me if you can!"

Buddy bounced into the air, and Lila laughed as she chased after him. They played catch until the sun began to set. Buddy showed her amazing tricks—he could spin like a tornado, float like a cloud, and change colors.

When the other kids saw Lila playing with her magical baseball, they stopped their game and came over. Their eyes grew wide as they watched.

"That's the most amazing baseball ever!" said Tommy, the boy who never let anyone play.

Buddy wiggled in Lila's palm. "Real magic isn't about who's best," he whispered so only she could hear. "It's about playing together."

Lila smiled at the other kids. "Want to play with us?"

That afternoon, under the palm tree's watchful branches, they invented the best game ever. And Lila learned that the most powerful magic wasn't in her palm—it was in sharing and friendship.
