The Palm Tree Protocol

I was four minutes into my first high school house party and already hiding behind a massive potted **palm** tree in the corner. My social battery had officially died somewhere between the fourth "what's up" and someone spilling jungle juice on my new Vans.

That's when I saw him—Jordan from AP Bio, standing by the snack table with what was definitely spinach stuck in his front teeth. The literal **spinach** dip from earlier, now decorating his smile like some kind of vegetable battle cry.

I had a choice: keep hiding behind my palm tree fortress or be a decent human being.

"Hey," I said, emerging like some kind of socially awkward butterfly. "You've got..." I pointed at my own teeth.

Jordan's face turned the color of a tomato. "Oh my god. Since when?"

"Since you started talking to Maya about your deceased **goldfish** for ten minutes straight."

He groaned. "I told that story out loud? The one about how Bubbles didn't actually die but my mom flushed him anyway?"

"Every word." I tried not to smile. "It was kind of iconic, honestly."

"You're Maya's friend, right? The one who draws?"

"Yeah. I'm Leo."

"Cool." He wiped the spinach from his teeth. "Want to get out of here? There's a 24-hour diner down the street. I'm thinking we need to establish some ground rules for party survival. Rule one: always check your teeth after spinach dip."

"Rule two," I added, "don't hide behind palm trees like a loser."

"Rule three: sometimes the worst moments make the best stories."

We left together, walking past all the people still performing normalcy. And yeah, maybe we didn't stay at the party. But sometimes the real connection happens when you're brave enough to step out from behind the palm tree and point out the spinach in someone's smile.
