The Palm Tree Pitcher
Max loved baseball more than anything, but he had no one to play with. Every day after school, he'd sit under the old palm tree in his backyard, tossing his worn baseball up and catching it again. The palm fronds whispered secrets in the breeze, and Max wished they could tell him where to find a friend.
One afternoon, as Max cupped the baseball in his palm, something strange happened. The ball began to glow, warm as sunshine. Suddenly, a tiny dog popped out from inside his palm—no bigger than a marble, with fur the color of golden sunshine and eyes that sparkled like stars.
"I'm Barkley!" the dog squeaked. "The Magic Palm sent me!"
Max gasped. "You can talk?"
"I can do lots of things!" Barkley said, growing bigger until he was the size of a real dog. "But I only exist because your heart is pure and you really want a friend. That's how the magic works."
Max couldn't believe it. He finally had a friend—and one who could play baseball! Every afternoon, they played under the palm tree. Barkley could catch balls in his mouth, hit them with his tail, and even make the baseball fly in loops and spirals.
One day, a new kid moved in next door. His name was Leo, and he watched Max and Barkley play from behind his fence.
"That's the coolest dog ever," Leo said softly.
Max noticed how lonely Leo looked. Remembering how it felt to have no one, he waved Leo over.
"Want to play?" Max asked.
Leo's face lit up. They played baseball until sunset, and when Barkley did his magical spiral pitch, Leo cheered louder than anyone.
"You're my best friend," Leo told Max.
Max smiled, patting Barkley's head. "I have two best friends now."
That night, the palm tree glowed brighter than ever. Max realized something wonderful: the magic hadn't just given him a dog friend—it had taught him how to BE a good friend too.
And every time Max held his baseball in his palm and thought about being kind, Barkley appeared, ready for another adventure together.
