The Palm Tree Padel Champion
Lily loved playing padel more than anything in the world. Every day after school, she would rush to the old padel court behind the community center, her magical rainbow-colored racket bouncing against her hip.
But nobody wanted to play with Lily anymore. Not since the stories started.
"There's a zombie living in that palm tree grove," the other children whispered, pointing at the three swaying palm trees that grew right next to the padel court. "He comes out at sunset and steals padel balls!"
Lily didn't believe them. Zombies weren't real—everyone knew that. Besides, she had left her favorite golden padel ball near those very palm trees yesterday, and she needed to get it back.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, Lily tiptoed toward the palm grove. Her heart beat fast, but she kept going.
"Hello?" she called out softly. "Is anyone there?"
A rustling sound came from the largest palm tree. Lily gasped as something green and shuffling stepped into view.
It looked a bit like a zombie—greenish skin, messy hair, clothes that looked old and tattered. But instead of scary red eyes, this creature had the kindest brown eyes Lily had ever seen. And in its hands? Lily's golden padel ball.
"You... you found my ball!" Lily exclaimed.
The creature nodded shyly. In a voice that sounded like autumn leaves crunching, it said, "I am Zom. I did not mean to scare anyone. I just love watching the padel games. The sound of the ball—pop, pop, pop—it makes my lonely heart feel happy."
Lily's eyes widened. "You like padel?"
"Oh yes!" Zom's face lit up. "In my old village, before... well, before I became different, I was the padel champion! I haven't played in so very long."
Lily made up her mind right then. "Would you like to play with me, Zom?"
Zom's eyes filled with sparkly tears. "Really? You would play padel with a zombie?"
"You're not scary," Lily said firmly, holding out her rainbow racket. "You're just someone who loves padel, like me."
For an hour, they played under the swaying palm trees as the first stars appeared. Zom was amazing at padel! He moved with surprising grace, and every time he hit the ball, it seemed to glow a little brighter.
The other children gathered at the edge of the court, watching in wonder. They had never seen padel played so beautifully.
"Can we play too?" a little boy asked timidly.
Zom looked at Lily, who smiled and nodded. Soon, children and zombies were playing padel together under the palm trees, laughter filling the warm night air.
Lily learned something important that day: sometimes the scariest stories are just about friends we haven't met yet. And that the best game of padel is the one where everyone is invited to play.
Now, every sunset, you can find them there—the children, the gentle zombie, and the palm trees swaying along to the magical pop-pop-pop of the friendliest padel game in the whole wide world.
