The Palm Tree Incident
The cafeteria hummed with its usual lunchtime chaos when Maya's world decided to collapse in slow motion. She'd been working up the nerve to talk to Ryan—the guy with the perfect hair and better smile—all week. Her friends had been hyping her up endlessly.
"Just do it, Maya," Serena had said that morning. "What's the worst that could happen?"
Turns out, the worst could happen.
Maya approached Ryan's table, heart hammering against her ribs like it was trying to escape. She'd spent twenty minutes fixing her hair, another ten debating between three outfits, and somehow managed to forget to check her reflection after lunch. Big mistake.
"Hey Ryan," she said, voice cracking slightly. "I was wondering if you wanted to—"
His eyes went wide. Not the good kind.
"Maya," he whispered. "You've got... um..."
She froze. Every single person at nearby tables had stopped talking. The kind of silence that feels like suffocation.
"Spinach," Ryan finally said, gesturing to his own teeth. "Like, a lot."
The horror washed over her like ice water. That morning's kale-spinach smoothie—which she'd choked down because her friend said it would clear her skin—had betrayed her completely.
Her palms were suddenly sweating so much they felt like they'd been held under a running faucet. She could hear Jayden and his friends snickering two tables over. The kind of laugh that echoes in your head for weeks.
Maya bolted. Didn't even grab her backpack. Just ran to the nearest bathroom, locked herself in a stall, and let the tears come hot and fast.
Ten minutes later, Serena found her.
"You okay?"
Maya stared at her hands. "I'm never showing my face again."
But here's the thing about humiliation: it doesn't actually kill you. It just feels like it will.
That afternoon, Maya got a text from Ryan. Not a mean one, not a "lol that was embarrassing" one. Just: "Hey, you still want to ask me something? Also, your teeth are fine now."
And somehow—because the universe is weird like that—she ended up sitting with him at lunch the next day. He made a joke about how he once had popcorn stuck in his braces for an entire class presentation. They laughed. Her palms didn't even sweat that much.
Life, it turns out, goes on. Sometimes with spinach in your teeth, sometimes without.
