The Palm-Sized Friend
Maya had the most extraordinary hair in all of Willowbrook. It wasn't just curly—it was magical. Whenever she felt happy, little silver sparkles danced through her curls. When she was sad, her hair turned soft blue, like a summer sky at dusk.
But Maya didn't know her hair was special until the day she sat beneath the old palm tree in her backyard, crying because she had no one to play with. A tear rolled down her cheek and landed right on her palm. Suddenly, something tiny moved among her curls.
"Hello there," said the squeakiest, friendliest voice Maya had ever heard.
She opened her eyes to find a tiny girl, no bigger than a butterfly, perched on her shoulder. The little creature had wings like a dragonfly and wore a dress made from palm fronds.
"I'm Pip!" said the tiny girl. "I've been living in your hair for weeks—it's so cozy! But I only come out when you need a friend most."
Maya gasped. "You live in my hair?"
"It's the best house in the world!" Pip laughed. "Your curls are like soft caves, and when you're happy, I can catch sparkles in my hands. See?" Pip held out her palm, and three silver sparkles swirled there, lighting up like tiny stars.
From that day on, Maya was never lonely. Pip rode in her pocket at school, sat on her palm during homework, and at night, they'd sit under the palm tree while Pip told stories about the magical world inside Maya's hair—where tiny creatures played hide-and-seek among the curls and drank sparkling tea.
Maya learned something wonderful: sometimes, the best friends are the ones you never knew were there all along, waiting for just the right moment to say hello.
