The Palm Reader's Wednesday

Maya felt like a zombie by 3 PM every Wednesday. Not the brain-eating kind—the corporate kind, hollowed out by quarterly reviews and the endless hum of fluorescent lights. She was running on fumes and the stale coffee from the breakroom.

Her hair, once a vibrant auburn she'd actually bothered to style, now hung in a perpetually tired ponytail. Sarah from accounting had started calling it her 'I give up' bun. Sarah wasn't wrong.

She should be running toward the exit, toward something—anything—else. But here she was, thirty-five and still 'paying her dues,' whatever that meant anymore.

Then Carlos from maintenance knocked on her door frame, holding a small succulent in a cracked pot. 'You look like you need this more than my desk does.'

Maya laughed, surprised by the genuine sound of it. 'I don't exactly have a green thumb, Carlos.'

'Neither do I. That's why it's still alive.' His palm rested against the doorframe, calloused and warm. 'My abuela says plants sense what you need. Maybe you just need something to care for that isn't a spreadsheet.'

Something shifted in her chest, loose and terrifying. 'You come to everyone's door with plants, or am I special?'

'Just the ones I notice running themselves into the ground.' He smiled, and it crinkled the corners of his eyes in a way that made something in her stomach do an honest-to-god flip. 'Dinner Friday? My place. I promise I'm much less profound when there's tacos involved.'

'Only if you tell me about your grandmother.'

'Deal.'

Maya looked at the succulent on her desk—small, resilient, unexpectedly alive. She touched her hair, loosening the ponytail until it fell around her shoulders. Maybe she wasn't quite a zombie anymore. Maybe she was just beginning.
