The Palm Reader's Warning
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, slicking back the baby hairs that refused to cooperate. Her hair had been transformed into what her stylist called "beach waves" and what Maya called "a frizzy mess." Tonight was Jordan's party—the social event of the semester—and her stomach was doing backflips.
"You look fine," her little brother Leo announced from the doorway, holding their cat, Mochi, like a furry baby. "Even with that spinach in your teeth."
Maya's hands flew to her mouth. "There's no spinach. We haven't even eaten dinner yet."
Leo shrugged, unbothered. "Just saying. Mochi thinks you look stressed."
The cat chose that moment to leap from Leo's arms, landing directly on Maya's freshly applied mascara. Chaos ensued.
Twenty minutes later, Maya's makeup was fixed, but her nerves were fried. Her best friend Samira arrived for their pre-party ritual: palm reading. Samira had discovered a new mystical app that claimed to predict your future based on a photo of your hand.
"Hold still," Samira said, snapping a picture of Maya's palm. "The algorithm says..." She paused dramatically. "You're going to embarrass yourself tonight, but in a way that makes people like you more."
"Gee, thanks," Maya said, checking her phone. Jordan had posted: "green smoothie station!" Great. More spinach.
The party was already popping when they arrived. Maya felt awkward until she spotted Jordan's cousin, Chloe, sitting alone on the back porch, scrolling through tarot card spreads on her phone.
"You into palm reading too?" Maya asked, sliding onto the swing beside her.
Chloe looked up, surprised. "Yeah, actually. I can tell you're having an off night."
"Is it that obvious?"
"Your hair keeps falling in your face," Chloe said, smiling. "And you've got a tiny piece of spinach stuck to your chin."
Maya groaned. "I knew it."
"It's cute," Chloe said. "Most people here are trying way too hard. You're just... real." She pushed a stray lock of hair behind Maya's ear. "Wanna help me with the green smoothie station? I think someone put actual kale in the blender instead of the pre-mixed stuff."
Maya laughed. For the first time all night, she felt like she could breathe.
Later, when Samira's prediction about embarrassing herself came true—tripping over the cat, who'd somehow followed them to the party—Maya didn't even care. She was too busy laughing with Chloe, realizing that sometimes the best moments happen when you stop trying to be perfect and just let yourself be messy.
