The Palm Reader's Warning
Mara stood at the edge of the resort pool, nursing her third gin and tonic. The company retreat had been three days of forced camaraderie and strategic networking, and she was exhausted. Behind her, a stray cat wound between her legs, mewling for attention.
"You're going to meet someone dangerous," the palm reader had told her that morning, tracing the life line on her left palm. "A fox in disguise. Be careful."
Mara had laughed, paid the twenty dollars, and walked away. But now, watching Elias emerge from the swimming pool, water cascading down his lean frame, she felt something tighten in her chest. He was her competitor for the promotion, charming and ruthless in equal measure—the kind of man who'd smile while cutting your throat.
He noticed her watching. "Mara. Haven't seen you all weekend."
"Avoiding the bullshit," she said, as he moved closer, dripping wet. The cat scattered.
"Smart." Elias leaned against the pool railing, close enough that she could smell chlorine and expensive cologne. "You know what they say about spinach."
"What?"
"Looks good on the menu. But once it's in your teeth, you can't get rid of it." His eyes dropped to her mouth. "Some things stain."
Mara's pulse accelerated. This was the game they'd been playing for months—innuendo wrapped in business talk, threats disguised as flirtation. She should walk away. Instead, she stepped closer.
"Is that a warning or a promise?"
Elias's expression shifted, something darker flickering behind his professional smile. "The fox always tells you what you want to hear, Mara. That's how they catch you."
The cat returned, weaving between them both. Mara reached down to stroke its spine, buying time. When she looked up, Elias was watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"I'm not prey," she said quietly.
"No," he agreed. "You're the one who set the trap."
They stood there as the sun dipped below the palm trees, two people who knew exactly what the other was capable of—and were terrified they might still fall for it anyway.
