The Palm Reader's Warning

palmorangefoxlightningpyramid

Maya's sweaty **palm** pressed against the plastic table as the carnival lady traced her lifeline. "You'll meet someone tonight," the woman whispered, her eyes glittering like she knew something Maya didn't. "A **fox** in disguise."

Behind her, Kayla and Jen were already snapchatting their **orange** sherbet mustaches, completely unaware that Maya had just spent her last twenty bucks on something she didn't even believe in. Senior year was supposed to be epic—not this collection of awkward moments and failed Instagram aesthetic attempts.

The social hierarchy of North High worked like a **pyramid** scheme Maya had never signed up for. At the apex: the varsity jacket guys and cheer squad. Somewhere in the middle: normal people with actual lives. At the bottom: girls who paid carnivals to tell them their futures.

"Earth to Maya!" Kayla waved. "Zach's looking at you."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organ. Zach Evans, soccer captain, actual human being who somehow existed in her AP Chem class without noticing her for three years, was walking toward their table. His smile struck like **lightning**—bright, overwhelming, and terrifyingly permanent.

"Hey," he said. "Your palm reading taking long? I've been waiting."

The carnival lady winked at Maya as Zach slid into the seat beside her. "Told you. A fox."

Kayla practically dissolved into silent giggles. Maya's face burned hotter than the summer sunset. Zach wasn't hitting on her—he literally just wanted his palm read too.

But as they sat there sharing the world's most awkward moment, something shifted. Zach made terrible jokes. Maya forgot to be self-conscious. For once, she wasn't worrying about where she fit on the pyramid or if her hair looked decent. She was just... existing.

Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones where you're brave enough to look foolish, where the lightning strikes exactly when you're not expecting it, and suddenly you realize that the fox in disguise was actually just a regular person who happened to be exactly who you needed to meet right then.
