The Palm Reader's Secrets

Rain streaked the window like tears she refused to cry. Elena stared at her husband's iPhone on the kitchen counter, its dark screen mocking her. For three months, she'd been the spy in her own marriage, tracking late nights, vague excuses about overtime, the sudden password protection on everything they once shared.

Tomorrow was their anniversary. They'd be in Vegas, where they'd first met at a cheesy palm reader booth on the Strip. The old woman had told Elena, 'Your lifeline forks twice—great love, twice chosen.' She'd laughed, drunk on honeymoon chemistry and slot machine bells. Now that line seemed like a curse.

The phone buzzed. A message from someone named 'Sphinx.' Elena's thumb hovered, then swiped it open before she could stop herself.

*Did she suspect anything?* The message read.

Elena's breath caught. She wasn't the only spy in this marriage.

The front door opened. Daniel walked in, rain droplets glistening on his dark hair like crushed diamonds. He stopped when he saw her face, saw the phone in her hand.

'I can explain,' he said quietly.

'Explain what?' Her voice trembled. 'The Sphinx? Or everything?'

He crossed the room, took her free hand, pressed his palm against hers. Their fingers intertwined, familiar and foreign all at once.

'I'm not who you think I am,' Daniel whispered. 'But I'm also not who you fear I am.'

'Then who are you?'

'Corporate espionage,' he said. 'The Sphinx is my handler. They hired me to investigate your company six months ago.' He squeezed her hand. 'I never meant to fall in love with the target.'

Elena pulled away, her palm suddenly cold without his. 'And that's supposed to make it better?'

'No.' Daniel's voice cracked. 'But I turned them down last week. I chose you.'

Outside, thunder rattled the windows. The phone on the counter buzzed again—from Sphinx.

Elena looked at the message lighting up the screen: *She knows. Abort.*

She met Daniel's eyes across the kitchen they'd painted together, the bed they'd bought, the life they'd built on a foundation of beautiful lies.

'Choose me again,' he said, reaching for her palm.

But Elena pulled her hand away. 'Some riddles,' she whispered, 'don't have answers worth finding.'
