The Palm Reader's Secret

palmspyfriendrunning

Maya's palms were sweating against her denim jeans as she sat across from Jake in the crowded cafeteria. This was it — her chance to finally prove herself.

"Let me see," she said, trying to sound confident instead of terrified. Jake extended his hand, and Maya pretended to study the lines crisscrossing his palm like she'd watched her grandmother do a thousand times.

"You're... going to get that starting position on varsity," she announced, channeling every ounce of conviction she could muster.

Jake's face lit up. "No way! That's literally what I've been working toward all summer."

What Jake didn't know — what NO ONE knew — was that Maya wasn't some mystical palm reader. She was just a dedicated spy. Every morning before school, she checked the team roster posted on the athletic office door. Every afternoon, she hung back after practice to overhear Coach Miller's conversations. Her "visions" were just carefully collected intelligence disguised as destiny.

The fame felt intoxicating at first. Students lined up during lunch, desperate to know if they'd make cheerleading, get into AP Bio, or finally catch Tyler's attention. Maya's answers were always right, and the power went straight to her head.

Then came the day her best friend Chloe sat down, tears streaming down her face.

"My parents are getting divorced," Chloe choked out, thrusting her hand forward. "Just tell me it's going to be okay."

Maya stared at Chloe's palm and saw nothing but skin and lines. No gossip column could predict this. No overhear conversation could fix it. The weight of every lie, every false prophecy, crashed down on her all at once.

She looked at Chloe's hopeful expression and felt sick.

"I can't," Maya whispered, the confession tearing out of her. "I'm not... I'm not actually reading anything. I just hear things and repeat them back. I'm sorry."

The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Maya braced herself for the anger, the betrayal.

Instead, Chloe let out this tiny laugh through her tears. "You know what? That actually makes me feel better. Because I was terrified you'd see something awful in my future, and... yeah. I think I needed to hear you're just making it up like everyone else."

Maya's palm was still sweating when Chloe squeezed it, but this time, she didn't wipe it away on her jeans. Some things were worth holding onto, even when they were messy and real.
