The Palm Reader's Redemption

Maria sat in the cubicle farm of Apex Wellness Solutions, staring at the pyramid chart on the whiteboard. Her upline, Greg, was pacing the room with the frenetic energy of a man who'd drunk too much kombucha.

"You're not reaching your potential, Maria," he said, smooth as polyester. "The pyramid only works if everyone commits."

She thought about the rent past due, the card maxed out, the palm reading side hustle that kept her afloat. She'd learned to cold read people the way Greg cold called leads — find their pain, promise a solution, collect the fee.

Her phone buzzed. Another desperate text from her mother. Can you send anything this month?

Maria slipped out during the break and sat in her car, hands trembling on the steering wheel. She did the thing she'd sworn to stop doing — opened her palm and traced the lines, pretending to see answers there like she told clients she could.

Then lightning cracked the sky, so bright it left spots in her vision. In that flash of clarity, she saw it: the pyramid above her and the pyramid of her own making, both built on the same foundation of desperate hope and calculated deception.

She turned the key, drove straight to the office, and walked into Greg's presentation. Twenty faces turned toward her, hungry for the dream he was selling.

"Actually," she said, voice steady as she'd ever been, "there's something you should know before you sign anything."

The pyramid above her on the whiteboard seemed to flicker in the fluorescent lights. Outside, thunder rumbled like approval.
