The Palm Reader's Pyramid

Elena smoothed stray hairs from her forehead, the corporate bathroom mirror reflecting a woman she no longer recognized. At forty-three, she'd finally made it to the executive floor—the pyramid's apex, where she'd spent two decades climbing. Her fedora sat on the counter, a prop she'd adopted to look more authoritative, more like the men who'd doubted her.

The company party was in full swing downstairs. She should be networking, celebrating her promotion as VP of Operations. Instead, she kept remembering her lunch with Marcus yesterday.

He'd read her palm over stale coffee in the breakroom—something he'd picked up from his grandmother, he'd claimed. 'Your head line is strong,' he'd said, tracing the crease across her palm with work-roughened fingers. 'But your heart line...' He'd hesitated. 'It's fragmented. Like you keep choosing something over connection.'

She'd laughed, pulled her hand away. 'Fortune-telling. Really, Marcus?'

'I just want you to be happy, El.' His voice had that familiar warmth, the one she'd ignored when she chose the promotion over their relationship three years ago.

Now, in the mirror, Elena saw it: the pyramid on her collarbone—the company's logo, branded in silver. A pyramid scheme of another sort. She'd traded everything for this view from the top.

She picked up her hat, then set it down again. Let them see her without it.

Marcus was still at the party, somewhere among the Junior VPs and analysts. She found him near the appetizers, wearing that same gentle smile. When their eyes met across the room, something unspoken passed between them—recognition, regret, possibility.

He extended his palm. Not as a joke this time.

Elena walked toward him, her heart finally whole enough to choose differently.
