The Palm Reader's Prophecy

Maya's sweaty palm pressed against the glass-topped table at Kai's graduation party, her heart doing that annoying flutter thing it always did when Ethan walked into the room.

'I see great passion in your future,' proclaimed Zarina, who'd taken three minutes of YouTube tutorials before declaring herself a psychic. 'Your love line is practically screaming.'

'My love line is definitely screaming something,' Maya muttered, wiping her hand on her shorts.

Ethan leaned against the doorway, that fox-like grin plastered across his face. The one that made half the junior class forget basic English. 'So who's the lucky guy?'

Maya's brain short-circuited. 'I mean, if you must know—'

'Her palm says she's destined for greatness,' her best friend Ji-yoon cut in, dragging Maya away by the wrist. 'Greatness that does not involve standing here spilling details to Mr. I-Play-Hard-To-Get.'

Later, while everyone else played beer pong in the basement, Maya found herself on the back porch with Sophie—the quiet girl from AP Chem who'd spent the entire year staring at Ethan like he was a lab specimen she couldn't quite figure out.

'That whole palm reading thing?' Sophie kicked at a loose porch board. 'Total BS, right?'

Maya laughed. 'Completely. Although my mom actually had hers done once and the lady told her she'd meet someone tall, dark, and handsome. Then she met my dad—short, pale, and balding.'

Sophie's grin was real this time. 'Classic.' She pulled a wrapped chocolate from her pocket. 'Want this? I can't do the dairy thing.'

They ended up talking for hours. About how weird it felt that everyone expected them to have their whole lives figured out at seventeen. About how sometimes you felt like a dog chasing its own tail, running in circles waiting for something that wasn't ever going to happen.

'You know what's actually messed up?' Sophie said around midnight. 'We spend all this time worrying about what the universe has planned for us—like, is it written in our palms or whatever? When really, we're just ... making it up as we go.'

The back door swung open. Ethan stood there, looking less fox-like and more just tired. 'Hey, you guys coming back in? We're doing karaoke.'

Maya looked at Sophie, who shrugged.

'Nah,' Sophie said. 'I think I'm good here.'

'Me too,' Maya said. And realized it was true.

The future wasn't written in her palms or the stars or whatever. It was just ... the next choice. The next conversation. The next person who surprised you by being more interesting than you'd given them credit for.

'You okay?' Ji-yoon found her later, watching the stars spin above the garage.

'Yeah,' Maya said. 'Just thinking.'

'About Ethan?'

'No,' Maya said, and it wasn't a lie. 'Just ... about how weird it is that we think everything has to be some big destiny thing. When really, life's just a bunch of random moments that happen.'

Ji-yoon nodded slowly. 'Deep. Also, FYI—Ethan's been asking for your number for like an hour.'

Maya smiled. 'I know.' And the flutter in her chest was gone, replaced by something steadier. Something real.

The universe didn't need to tell her what was coming next. She'd figure it out herself, one choice at a time.
